Nantahala Mountains: Wesser Bald

Location: Swain and Macon Counties, NC, 10 miles northeast of Beechertown, Wayah Ranger District, Nantahala National Forest

USGS Topographic Maps: Wesser

This area extends northward from Tellico Gap in the general direction of Wesser, on the Nantahala River. South of Tellico Gap lies the Tellico Bald area. The two areas are separated only by an electric power line and a single-lane gravel road that has multiple tight switchbacks on both sides of the gap.

The fire tower on Wesser Bald has been converted to a lookout platform through removal of the upper segments and installation of a floor with railings about a third of the way up the frame of the old tower. This makes an excellent lookout, affording views in every direction and is a popular destination for picnic parties.

The Appalachian Trail traverses the area, running generally north and south. There is an AT shelter in the center of the area. North of the shelter the Trail descends quickly to a bridge over the Nantahala River at Wesser. This is the location of the Nantahala Outdoor Center and a place for AT through hikers to get mail, showers and supplies.

The old location of the Applachian Trail, which ascends from Wesser Creek to the main ridge, climbs through beautiful groves and an abundance of flowers in the springtime. With a short shuttle, it makes an outstanding loop hike.
