National Legislation – Local Impact: LWCF Funding

Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) has introduced two bills to reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), now set to expire in 2018. LWCF was created in 1964 through offshore oil royalties, at an annual appropriation level of $900 million, and at no cost to the US taxpayer. LWCF provides benefits to all states, including sportsmen’s access, wildlife habitat, coastal conservation, and public outdoor recreation for all.

S.896, a permanent reauthorization bill for the program, was introduced earlier this month with Senator Michael Bennett. (D-CO), with additional bipartisan support of co-sponsors, including Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

S.569 was introduced last month with Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and in addition to reauthorization would permanently fund the LWCF. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) has co-sponsored S. 569.

There is also a House bill, H.R. 502, which is a permanent reauthorization bill for the program that was introduced in January by Representative Raul Grijalva, [D-AZ-3] and now has 164 co-sponsors in the house.

If they have not, ask them to sign on! Our public lands are the infrastructure that supports a powerhouse recreation industry, healthy kids and families, and an outdoor culture and uniquely American way of life.
